The IoT – The Internet of Things – Taking over the World!

iot2

For what seems like an eternity, The Cloud has been dominating every single technology based conversation.  It’s always The Cloud this, or The Cloud that, etc.  We’re starting to become more comfortable and well versed in The Cloud, and we can actually intelligently participate in a conversation about it.  Just as we’re getting into a groove with The Cloud, something else is making its way to the forefront: The IoT, or The Internet of Things.  What is that?  It sounds almost like a kind of zombie apocalypse!  I’m imagining an army of little robots connected to the Internet, and they’re taking over the world!  If that picture resonates with you, you’re not too far from the truth.

What is the Internet of Things?

Simply put, The Internet of Things, also knows as The IoT, is just the way it sounds; a bunch of things connected to The Internet!  When I say a bunch of things connected to The Internet, I mean everyday things.  For example, your television, coffee maker, refrigerator, washing machine, and even your dishwasher!  That’s right, your dishwasher can be connected to The Internet!  Why on Earth would you even want your dishwasher connected to The Internet?  It makes no sense?

Imagine this, you’re at work and you just received a phone call, from your In-Laws, that they’re coming over for dinner, but don’t worry, they’re bringing over some food and will “help” you with the cooking!  “Oh, I hope you don’t mind, Uncle Charlie and Aunt Peggy are coming along as well.  We all miss you so much and can’t wait to see you!”  As you take in a few deep breaths to calm yourself down, you realize that you kind of left the dishes for “later”, and that by the time you get home from work, you’ll need the entire stack washed and dried for your “guests”.

You make a quick call to your house.  Your 14 year old son just came home from high school.  “Max, can you please do me a huge favor?  I need all those dishes, that are on the counter, loaded into the dishwasher.  Can you do that for me?”, you beg.   Max responds, “Um, sure, but I have no idea how to set the dishwasher.”  You’re starting to panic.  This kid is practically a computer hacker, and he has no clue how to use a dishwasher?!?  You then remember that you just got your home wired for the Internet of Things, and you have a SimiPlex SmartHome.  You then hear Max’s confirmation that all the dishes have been loaded.  You thank Max for being so helpful, whip out your cellphone, and open the SmartHome app.  You click a few buttons and presto, your dishes are being washed, to perfection!

Next, you set the central air conditioner to the perfect temperature, and set the oven to start preheating at precisely 4:37 pm.  You also set your lighting to the proper level, and some soothing classical music to begin playing at 5:35 pm.  You do all this from your mobile app, while at work!

Needless to say, dinner was a smashing success!

Let’s examine some more benefits of the Internet of Things:

The Perfect Morning:

What time do you wake up in the morning?  If you’re like me and wake up at 4:15 am, you’ll notice that it’s kind of dark outside at that hour.  When you turn on the light, the room is instantly flooded with an offensively bright light that causes your eyes to recoil in pain.

Imagine the following scenario.  At 4:13 am, your bedroom lighting illuminates, to a soft and gentle level.  It increases in intensity, ever so softly, every 15 seconds.

Your alarm clock wakes you up at exactly 4:15 am, playing music that makes you want to jump out of bed and take over the world!  By now, the lighting is at 15% illumination, which is perfect for when you just wake up.  As you go about your business of getting ready for your day, the lights continue its steady incline, until they reached your desired level at the desired time.  Upon entering the kitchen, you are greeted by the smell of freshly roasted coffee, which was timed for your entry, to perfection!

My question for your is, what does your perfect morning look like, and what needs to happen for it to materialize?

Freedom with The Cloud

Have youFreedomWithTheCloud ever been in a situation where your voicemail box filled up because you were out of the office and couldn’t call in to check your messages?  How did that affect your relationship with your clients and staff?  Did it give you anxiety about losing business every time you stepped away from your desk?  Do you feel chained to your office?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, I feel your pain.  Owning a small business means wearing multiple hats.  You have to make phone calls, answer the phone, fill out paperwork, go onsite to sell, pay bills, and deal with a broken printer; all at the same time!  Unfortunately, you can’t be in 2 places at one time.  Although quantum physicists have proven that electrons can indeed be in two places at the same time, we haven’t yet quite figured out how to harness that power to enable us to multiply ourselves!  This means that when you’re out of the office and a call rolls over to voicemail, you’re not physically able to respond to that message until you call in to check your messages.  If you’re out of the office for an entire afternoon and missing alot of calls, you can potentially fill up your mailbox pretty quickly, resulting in unhappy customers.  The good news is that with the SimiPlex Cloud Based Solution you automatically receive all your voicemail messages in your email, allowing you to check and respond to messages on the go.  Leveraging the power of The Cloud, you can transform a 2 hour New York City traffic jam into productive work time, so that by the time you get back to the office, you are free to tackle the next batch of items on your endless to do list.  Furthermore, with the SimiPlex Mobility Package, you can have all your calls simultaneously ring your desk and mobile phones, so that you never miss that important call in the first place!

My question for you is, what are you doing in your business to enable you to have the freedom to do the thing that you intially started your business for?

How secure is your business?

howsecureisyourbusiness

Today I’d like to focus on security.  One of the things that keeps business owners up at night, besides worrying about how they’re going to make the next payroll, is the fear of someone breaking into their business.  Things may get stolen.  Their business may get completely ruined, or even worse.  They may lose their intellectual property.

One way of implementing a good security solution is by the use of surveillance cameras.  Now, not all cameras were created equally.

One of my partners recently told me a story about a customer who is a meat distributor, who noticed that meat was disappearing from his shop.  To solve that problem, he installed a camera right inside of his walk in freezer.  A short while later he discovered (no surprise here) that one of his guys was swiping slabs of fillet minion and stuffing them into his pants!

Now, a camera is only as good as the data it records.  So, if our meat bandit wanted to keep his job secure, as well as his daily supply of fresh steaks, all he has to do is walk over to the controller box and delete the recording.  Then, he’s all set for another day and another heist.  This presents a new problem.  You can have the best security system in the world; however, if you are dealing with an inside job, you’re back to square one.  How do you keep your business safe from the people you’re supposed to trust?

With the SimiPlex Cloud Based Solution you have the ability to record your surveillance video directly to The Cloud.  Because there is nothing on premises to delete, even the most determined tech savvy carnivorous caper will not be able to tamper with your recordings.  This helps keep your business safe and secure, no matter what happens.

My question for you is, what steps are you taking to keep your business and intellectual property safe and secure?

A little bit about SimiPlex.  Your phone is an integral part of your company.  For some of us, it’s the lifeblood of our business.  This is why we, at SimiPlex Technologies, consider ourselves to be much more than a phone vendor.  We become your trusted advisor, a role that we take very seriously.

We do this by focusing on much more than just the phones.  We help you solve business problems in your business.  For example, a hair salon owner who is looking for help on whether or not to hire a full time receptionist.  Or a real estate broker who is concerned about preserving his brand identity when opening a new office.  Or a doctor who is looking for help to keep his waiting room calm.

What we offer is the latest in technology, state of the art Cloud Based phones, where we save you time and money by not having to wait for a telephone company technician to arrive when something breaks.  The reason being, there is nothing to break!  You no longer need to purchase expensive equipment that breaks down or gets outdated.  All you need are your state of the art phones, plug them into a high speed Internet connection, and they just work!  With regards to your high speed Internet connection, we offer that too as well as the cabling that brings it all together.

As Steve Jobs once said, “Be a yardstick of quality.  Some people just aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.”

We, at SimiPlex Technologies, are the yardstick of quality.

Top 10 Questions to ask your phone vendor

top10questionstoaskyourphonevendorAre you considering making a change to your communications infrastructure? With the rise in popularity of The Cloud, people are flocking to it by the dozen. While there are numerous benefits to embracing The Cloud, with new technology comes new concerns. Here are my top 10 questions I recommend people ask their phone vendors before pulling the plug on their old clunker PBX.

1. How will this solution scale with my business? Many companies are cash strapped these days. Budgets are small, yet needs are plentiful. Your vendor has just proposed a solution that meets your needs today. The question is, how will this solution scale when your needs change? Suppose in 6 months from now you hire 5 more people. Will this solution enable you to accommodate that growth? What if, in a year from now, you opened a new office in another city? Will this solution enable you to seamlessly transfer calls between cities just as you once transferred calls between departments?

2. What happens in the event of a disaster? Many of us in New York remember Superstorm Sandy. The subways were flooded, and power was out in many parts of the city. Suppose your company was affected by the storm and your office was without power for a week? What would your callers experience if they were to call your office during a similar power outage? An acceptable answer would be that your phone lines still continue to function, despite your office being without power. Callers will hear your automated attendant greeting, and transfer to people’s voicemail boxes. Messages will then get distributed via email. An even better answer would be, besides everything that was just mentioned, callers will be transferred to people’s mobile phones. You never miss a call, even during a natural disaster! Let’s take this one step further. What were to happen if your cloud provider was the one that was affected by the storm, yet your company was in a different region, unaffected by the disaster? Suppose their data center got completely flooded and was destroyed! What happens to your phone service? Do your phones continue to function? The answer you want to hear is that they have multiple geographically redundant data centers. Your business should never be affected by a disaster at a data center.

3. What happens during an outage? Sometimes your service provider may have an outage. We hope it never happens. It usually doesn’t. However, you’re still concerned about how you will be affected in case there is, God forbid, a service outage. The answer I’d want to hear is that they’re setup to automatically route inbound calls to your mobile phone, so that you never miss an important call. Of course, you can always opt to send your calls to an answering service, like doctors use. However, the point is, there should always be a provision for an outage.

4. What happens when my Internet goes down? I hear this one all the time. “My cable Internet is down.” The point of failure when it comes to The Cloud is your Internet connection. There is no way around it, you need the Internet to access The Cloud. Depending on your uptime requirements, your phone vendor may suggest getting redundant Internet connections from two different providers, or even having a 4G LTE Cellular Data backup so that your phones can still continue to function, despite an Internet outage. Due to financial considerations, having a redundant Internet connection may be out of reach for some small businesses. A good Cloud provider can still continue to process calls even if the Internet goes down at your location. Acceptable options are as follows:

a. Inbound calls continue to route to the main company greeting. Upon attempting to transfer to an extension, the call will immediately route to voicemail. The voicemail will then be emailed to the called party, who can then call back via his or her cellular phone.

b. Inbound calls will be programmed to route to a designated cellular phone or 3rd party answering service.

5. Who do I call for support, and what are the hours? This is extremely important. First of all, you want a phone number where you can reach a live person. When you’re having a service affecting issue, you don’t want to send an email, nor do you want to leave a message for a callback. You need to have access to someone who can help immediately! You phone is the lifeblood of your business, and any phone vendor who is honored with your business, needs to respect that fact. While it’s OK to have 8×5 M-F support hours for non-service affecting issues, the only acceptable answer to this question is 24x7x365. I have a customer who had a service affecting issue on New Year’s Day. He texted me about his problem, and I, his phone vendor, jumped on it immediately. Realizing that this issue is beyond my capability to address, I escalated it to the Cloud Provider. Being the top notch company that they are, within minutes I received a text message from their VP of Operations that the matter is being looked into immediately. I then received a call back from their Technical Support manager, who called me from his house during a New Year’s Day party! This is the kind of dedication you want from your phone vendor.

6. What is the turnaround time for support? Just to be clear, there is a difference between reaching a live person, and having the right person address the problem. Many times, when you call into a support organization, you’re speaking to someone who creates a trouble ticket. This ticket then gets passed on to the appropriate level support person. The turnaround time between opening a ticket and working with an engineer should be pretty short, depending on the severity of the problem.

7. What is supported? This one is a no-brainer. Everything should be supported. However, be careful. Sometimes your router or firewall may not be supported by your new Cloud Provider. Sometimes, your data network is not up to speed. Have your phone vendor articulate what components of your network infrastructure is supported and what is not.

8. What is your warranty policy? The answer you want to hear is that everything you purchase is under warranty for the duration of your service agreement. If you purchase brand new phones and signed up for a 5 year agreement, then your phones should be covered for 5 years. If a phone stops working, it should be replaced at no cost to you.
9. What is my eligibility when new features are rolled out? One of the advantages of The Cloud is that new features are made available to you immediately. Most of the time, it’s at no extra cost. You don’t have to go through expensive upgrades as you do with an on premises PBX. Find out upfront what’s eligible and what’s not.

10. What are my self-service options? While it’s really nice to have your Cloud Provider service your phone system, sometimes it’s a lot quicker doing certain things yourself. For example, if people move around frequently at your company, it’s much more efficient for you to be able to log onto a portal and make those changes yourself, than to call your provider every time a change is needed. This is especially true with larger organizations. Find out what options are available, and if it serves the needs of your business.
My question for you is, what questions are you asking your phone vendor to ensure that you get the best value for your business?

Inside The Cloud – Issue 1

inside-the-cloud-1080x675

We are starting a new documentary series called Inside The Cloud.  This is where we tour various Cloud facilities and report on what’s inside.

Have you ever wondered what happens inside The Cloud?  We hear a lot of hype about the versatility and resilience of The Cloud.  However, as you know, The Cloud is a mystery.  What actually goes on inside their facilities?

There are many moving parts to The Cloud.  First and foremost you have the Data Center.  This is a facility which houses the equipment that provides services in The Cloud, as well as the Internet and phone line connections used by the equipment.  A good Cloud provider has multiple redundant data centers, so that if one entire location were to fail, another data center in another city is available to immediately take over its services.  The Data Center is the heart of The Cloud.  This is where it all happens.

Next you have the NOC – Network Operations Center.  A Cloud provider’s NOC is like NORAD for The Cloud.  You have lots of people with lots of computer screens on their desks, and giant monitors on the walls displaying various geographic renderings in various levels of magnification.  I recently toured the NOC facility for Enqwest, one of our valued Cloud partners in Fairfield, New Jersey.  It was a very exciting experience.  I met Calvin, one of their senior NOC administrators, who gave me a tour of what happens inside his corner of the NOC.  He had several large monitors mounted on the wall. One of them had a map of the United States which had icons all over it, indicating customer locations in various states of alert status.  Calvin zoomed into the map to display the status of a customer in Beverly Hills, California.  The map showed the GPS location of this customer, including a street map.  I was able to see all the details of the VoIP router at that location.  I could see which Internet provider was delivering service, what its IP Address is, as well as whether or not they had a backup Internet provider.  I could also see how many phones they had deployed, their respective MAC Addresses, as well as their current state.  I could see that the service was running smoothly with no alarms present.  Should there be any issues, their onsite equipment, such as the router and/or phones, can be reprogrammed and even rebooted directly from the NOC console in New Jersey!  Think of the NOC as the brain of The Cloud.  This is where important decisions are made to keep your service running smoothly 24x7x365.

Finally, you have the Contact Center.  This is a very integral part of the entire operation.  The Contact Center is the point of contact between the customer and provider.  This is where we, the customers, interact with The Cloud provider for support on our services.  When things go wrong or when we just want to make a change to our account, the Contact Center is there to help us with our needs.  You can think of the Contact Center as the ears and mouth of The Cloud.  This component helps us feel safe that there is someone on the other end looking out for our best interests.

I hope this has been helpful in demystifying The Cloud, and introducing you to its various moving parts.

Solving Common Problems for Event Management Companies

solvingcommonproblemsforeventmanagementcompanies

If you’ve ever been to a business expo, a conference, or a corporate event, you’ve most probably already benefited from the services of an event management company.  For example, let’s take a business conference.  Here are some of the services you may have taken for granted as an attendee:

  • Conference Registration – You know, the web portal where you can register for the event.
  • Mobile App – A free app you can download, which will have all your registration info, plus the entire conference program information.
  • On-site check in – When you arrive at the conference, you check in at a booth, receive your badge, as well as a nice care package.
  • Lunch and refreshments – Everything just magically shows up, from the fancy napkins to the waiters. Who keeps on bringing those convenient water bottles that keep getting snatched up?
  • Keeping the event going on schedule – Things happen, and someone has to make sure that the event continues on track.
  • Internet Marketing – Publicize your event on social media, send out and track emails, and send reminders to attendees.
  • Collect Payment – Hey, money has to come in!
  • Customer Support – Someone is inevitably going to need support.

You have a business to run, and an event to put on, and you don’t have the time, effort, or energy to focus on the minutia of running an event.  You want it to just work!  That’s where event management companies excel.  They know the business, they have the relationships, and they’re best equipped to make it happen, so that you can focus on what’s important to you!

Now, event management companies also have needs.  Let’s take their communications, for example.  This past week I had the opportunity to speak with several event planners regarding their needs with regards to their phones.  I started off my conversation with A.S., a New York City based event planner, as follows: “I noticed on your website that your company offers onsite assistance at national events.  Can you imagine what it would be like if you can have phone service at your event, which ties in seamlessly to your main phone service at your office?  I’m not talking about getting a separate system.  I’m talking about a fully integrated system which lets you take phones from your office and plug it into a specially provisioned VoIP Router which routes the calls back to your office via an onboard SIM Card.  You basically, take this router to your event, plug in a few phones, and you get VoIP service out of thin air!”  Imagine setting up an outdoor sporting event and actually having access to business phones!  Or, perhaps, an outdoor technology extravaganza.  In this day and age, phone and Internet service are ubiquitous services that should not be limited by geography or circumstances.  As an event planner, having access to these services when your competitors do not, gives you a distinct technological competitive advantage.

L.D., the founder of a New York City boutique event management firm, told me as follows:  “One thing that can never happen is our phones going down!  Another very important thing for us is to have the ability to self administer our phone service, so that we can redirect people’s phones to their cell phones, and provision new employees with ease.  We need to have this ability both, from our laptops, and from our mobile phone browser, as many times we are all offsite at events and all we have with us is our mobile phones.”

Fortunately, for L.D., the SimiPlex Cloud Based Solution can do all that and more.  Let’s start with the reliability of the service itself.  Our service is hosted in The Cloud, and is replicated across multiple secure data centers.  This means that if an entire data center went completely offline, there are still several other data centers available to route the call to and from your office.  Let’s say your office experienced a complete loss of power, the service will then route the call to your mobile phone, so that you never lose a single call.  Furthermore, with the SimiPlex 4G LTE capable VoIP Router, should your office Internet service go down, your VoIP phones will automatically re-register to The Cloud via the cellular network.  Your office phones will continue to function as if nothing happened.  When your Internet comes back up, the phones will immediately revert back to the wired Internet service.  Talk about peace of mind!

With regards to end user provisioning, the SimiPlex Admin Portal is extremely user friendly, enabling you to perform tasks such as renaming an extension, turning on call forwarding, or changing a forwarding destination, with ease.  With a few simple clicks, your change is activated, and you can go back to focusing on putting on a world class event!

My question for you is, what are you doing in your business to ensure that your time, effort, and energy is focused on achieving your goals, and not on things that would be best fulfilled by someone else?

#AskTheCEO How did you get here, who are your competitors, will landlines disappear, and how to handle a pressured phone call?

ask-the-ceo-ep-3

How did you get here?  Why did you choose this particular business?

I have been in the telecom industry for over two decades.  Ten years ago, I started a business as a telecommunications consultant.  Basically, what that that means is, I was able to follow my passion, which is helping people, working with people, helping businesses, and being their trusted advisor.  Over the last year or so I noticed some trends shifting with regards to Cloud based solutions.  I noticed that there was a decline in sales in Premise-Based PBXs.  The vendors that I have been helping didn’t have as many PBX sales as they used to.  Google and Microsoft were coming out with their cloud based products and pushing them.  This past January, I sent out a simple 10 question survey to my client base asking for feedback on the service I have been providing.  One prominent customer sent back his survey which said, “You’re doing a great job and we like your service, but we’re going to be choosing a different provider – because we want a 100% cloud based service, which you don’t currently offer.  The interesting thing was, my first thought was that of gratitude.  I was so thankful that this customer was open and honest with me about his feelings, and felt comfortable enough to share them with me.  This was a real eye opener to me.  Right then and there I made a decision to go full out with Cloud.  I started to do research, produce content, and just immerse myself in the Cloud based technology, so that I can join the ranks of the leaders in the industry.  That’s why I chose this business, and that’s how I got to where I am today.

Who are your competitors?

I have a funny answer to this question.  There are two parts to this answer.  My response to this question is that I don’t have any competitors.  What I mean by that is, every business sells commodities.  The commodities may have competition but I don’t have competition.  The unique way we do business doesn’t have any competition. That’s an important thing to consider when talking to people about your business.  What is your differentiator? What sets you apart from other businesses.  I truly believe that the way we do business, the way we look out for our customers, the service that we provide, our unique prospective, the way we are trusted advisors to our clients, set us apart from the competition – from other businesses that sells similar commodities as we do.  It’s not about what we sell.  It’s not about the Cloud PBX, or the fiber optic internet service that we offer, or any of the other cool stuff that you’ll find on our website.  It’s about what can we do for the customer, what solution can we provide to you, which will make your life a whole lot easier.

The second part of the answer is, that the commodities have competition.  Therefore, our commodities’ competition, meaning the Cloud Based services that we provide, would be similar sized, small to medium businesses that provide Cloud Based services. So yes, the commodities have competition, but we as a business don’t have competition.

Will landlines ever disappear?

I think that they’re going to evolve.  Let’s take a look at the trends and let’s take a look at an example.

We’ve had landlines for many decades.  Then they evolved into VoIP lines, and mobile phones.  Now let’s take an example of a company that has evolved.  Verizon, a national phone carrier.  They were our local phone company which sold dial tone.  This was their bread and butter.  Due to the advent of the Internet and the proliferation of high speed broadband connections, all these little VoIP companies started popping up. They were basically competing with the telcos and selling VoIP services to replace people’s dial tones with cheaper alternatives.   This became very popular because it was saving people alot of money.  Verizon did two things:  (1) If you can’t beat them, join them, so they joined the bandwagon and started offering VoIP services as well.  (2) They realized that people were signing up for VoIP services that run over the Internet, so they started offering high speed Internet access as well!  They owned the cables up on the poles and under the ground.  If they are going to lose dial tone business to the Internet, they may as well join the party and sell Internet access!  So they started offering DSL, and now they’re selling fiber optic Internet Service.  What a brilliant idea that was!  What I’m getting at with this is that there is going to be some kind of evolution to the landline. Right now it’s presented as VoIP services which seems to be very popular in residential settings,  and even in business applications where we have SIP lines.

How do you handle a pressured phone call, such as when you call someone and he tells you “I only have two minutes for you”, and you know that you have only one shot at making it to the next level?

When you reach out to someone and he tells you “I only have 2 minutes for you”, and you know that this is your one shot chance to make an impression,  my feeling is, “Bring it on!” I get excited!  I actually had it happened to me twice yesterday.  When this happens, my reaction is, “That’s fine.  Whatever time you have, that’s all the time I need”.  What I do at this point is, I get strictly down to business.  I wrote an article couple weeks ago about handling phone anxiety.  You can read about it here: http://www.simiplex.com/2016/10/12/difficult-phone-call/.  In the article I listed four questions that you need to ask yourself – what, why, how, and who.  I’m going to summarize them here.  First – what do you want to accomplish? What’s the outcome?  Then, why are you doing it?  Engage the emotion.  How do you feel about it?  The third question is how are you going to do it?  Create possibilities.  Get into the heads of the people that you’re going to talk to, and try to understand it from their perspective.  Finally, who do you need to become in order to pull this off successfully?  In situations like this, you will need a lot of confidence. To build confidence, you have to go through the exercises as mentioned above.  What’s interesting is that I actually worked through all of this subconsciously as I was growing in business and in my role as an entrepreneur.  I spent a lot of time creating content.  I spent time talking to customers and talking to people, creating videos, and writing articles. All this help me solidify in my mind, what it is that I’m doing, so that I have a clear message for when I call somebody.  Most people are hard to reach.  You’re usually chasing after them for 2 weeks, and sometimes even for 2 months.  Then, you finally get them by accident and they answer the phone. Now an opportunity presents itself to show them what you’re made of.  What you need to do is to have a clear picture in your mind as to what this is all about. Why are you calling this person?  “I’m calling this person because I want to help him. I want to show him how I can help him.”  Right there, the goal has been solidified. You’re calling him because you want to help.  Next comes, “Why do I want to help him?”  Because this is what I do best. This is what I love to do, and I am knowledgeable in what I do. I’ve been in this business for decades and I know that I can help him.  How am I going to help him?  I have a list of possibilities ready.  I could provide him this solution if this is what his pain point is.  I have another solution if he has a different need.  I have so many different possibilities.  Then comes the “who”.  This part I work through and I solidify before I even pick up the phone. So by the time I get on the phone, and he gives me two minutes, I am so unbelievably grateful that he gave me two minutes of his time that I’m completely relaxed and can get right down to business.  it’s a complete game changer.  I’m just confident and in flow and can handle whatever gets thrown at me.

#AskTheCEO The Cloud, Green Business, and How to Manage Stress

zasktheceoep2

This week we are continuing the new series called #AskTheCEO, where we will feature questions answered by our CEO, Avrohom Gottheil.  To have your question featured on a future article, send an email to info@simiplex.com, with a subject line of #AskTheCEO.

  1. How does Cloud fit in with the green business/ sustainable energy philosophy?

By now, we all know what cloud is.  With Cloud , you basically have all your equipment out there, in The Cloud. What you may not realize is that by having equipment in your office, you are also paying for electricity.  You’re pulling electricity from the utility company. Now, that electricity is burning coal or some other fuel that your utility company is using to produce this electricity, so right off the bat, by not having all this equipment in your office, you’re doing your part in providing a clean environment.  Now, you may ask – wait a minute, the data center is also using electricity!  So, how are you contributing to a cleaner environment by subscribing to The Cloud?  We’re still burning coal and polluting the environment?   The answer is, that although the equipment is actually in the data center,  it’s much more efficient than hosting it in your office.  The data center has server farms that support hundreds and thousands of clients; in many instances, on a single server!  Whereas, if you’re hosting that equipment in your office, you would need a server just for yourself.  Think about it.  If you imagine the difference between a thousand customers using one server, versus one customer using a dedicated server, it’s like taking a bus to work versus driving in yourself.  If you have a bus with sixty people, you’re using only one vehicle, but it’s transporting sixty people at the same time.  Although a bus is bigger than a car, you’re still burning less fuel per person than if each person took their own car.  The same is true with Cloud Computing and Cloud Communications.  By leveraging economies of scale with The Cloud, you end up using a lot less electricity per client, than having a dedicated server in your environment.

  1. With everything that is available to learn online, where should I go to start building my knowledge base in telecommunications?

There is a wealth of knowledge available online and sometimes there could be too much information, and I believe that’s where this question came from.  How do I know what to focus on in order to become successful in this industry?  I’d like to give you a couple of terms that you could Google, or you can go on Wikipedia and just familiarize yourself with these terms.  We have PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network – aka phone company or wide world) which we talked about in our last episode, POTS (Plain Old Telephone System – aka analog lines or traditional home phone line), and other types of phone lines – T1, ISDN-PRI (You can make 24 simultaneous calls on a single line!) What is DTMF?  DTMF stands for Dual Tone Multi Frequency, also known as touch tones.  SIP – Session Initiation Protocol. SIP is the technology that a lot of residential VOIP companies are using.  Look up the term VOIP (Voice Over IP) – What is it? How is it used? The Cloud utilizes VOIP.  Once you get through that list, you can go a little deeper.  Look up QoS (Quality of Service) – that’s the technology that enables voice quality over the internet.  Look up Network Security, you want to make sure that your communications are secure so understand what that term is.  Look up Contact Centers – you have different types of contact center – single channel, multi channel, omni channel. What’s the difference between them?  The following article is a good resource where you can learn about an Omni Channel Contact Center: http://www.simiplex.com/2016/07/21/scalability-for-startups/

Once you have an understanding of the basic concepts, then you need to sit down and figure out what it is that you want to do.  There are so many different things that you can do in the telecom industry, just like in any industry.  You could be an engineer.  You could install phone systems, you could support, you could maintain, you could sell.  Maybe you don’t want to work on phone systems.  Perhaps you would like to write a custom application that utilizes telecommunications.  I would say look up the terms and understand what telecom is.  Then figure out what is it that you want to do, and then go from there.

  1. What do you do to relieve stress?

If you’re stressed out, you’re not moving up in life.  Here is what I do.   I work out every day.  I go running every morning. That, in and of itself, is a huge stress reliever. It helps regulate your hormones and your mood.  In addition to that, there are still stressful periods and events that come up, so how do I manage that?  What I would say is that it’s a mindset thing. What I mean by that is you have to become consciously aware that you’re under stress so that you can catch it and then manage it from there.  What I find, (and BTW this is not my own knowledge, I actually learnt this and I practice it every day), is that I become aware of when I am under stress.  Let’s take a perfect example.  You’re driving through New York City, and traffic is bumper to bumper.  You had to be somewhere an hour ago, and it doesn’t look like you’re going to get there any time soon.  What is the first thing that you notice about yourself?  Perhaps, you may start feeling irritated?  How does that feel?  Pay attention to the kinesthetic. When you’re relaxed, how do you breathe?  When you’re relaxed, you breathe deeply.  What happens when you’re irritated or stressed?  Most probably, you’re holding your breath or your breathing becomes very shallow.  The trick is to check in with yourself, even when you’re not under stress.  Ask yourself, “How am I feeling right now?  How’s my breathing?  Hey wait a minute, my breathing is becoming very shallow. I must be under stress right now!” Then, you interrupt that stressful pattern and start breathing deeply. There’s a technique called “box breathing” where you take a deep breath for 5 seconds, hold it for 5 seconds, breathe out slowly for 5 seconds, and then  hold it for 5 seconds.  By breathing you are basically regulating your physiology to help yourself relax and calm down.  If you can become aware of the different states that you’re in, and apply the deep breathing, you’ll find that you can manage stress a whole lot better than you used to.

US Presidential Elections and the Cloud

trump-clinton1.jpg

You’re probably wondering how on Earth I’m going to tie in the US Presidential Elections to Cloud Communications.  After all, this is a real stretch, even for me!  However, the political landscape has everything to do with cloud technology.  Let’s take a look, shall we?

Here are some recent headlines:

  • Trump brags about using ‘other people’s money’ amid questions over charity use – 9/20/16

Let’s go through each one of these.  By the time you’re done reading this article, you’ll be convinced about the connection between politics and The Cloud.

Trump brags about using ‘other people’s money’ amid questions over charity use – 9/20/16

In an article posted at http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/20/politics/donald-trump-foundation-other-peoples-money/ CNN states:  ” Donald Trump bragged Tuesday there’s ‘nothing like’ using other people’s money, hours after a report said he used more than $250,000 from his charitable organization to litigate lawsuits against his business interests.

Trump, while calling for building safe zones in Syria financed by Gulf states, vaunted the benefits of doing business with ‘OPM.’

‘It’s called OPM. I do it all the time in business. It’s called other people’s money,’ Trump said. ‘There’s nothing like doing things with other people’s money because it takes the risk — you get a good chunk out of it and it takes the risk.’

Ok, what does Trump using other people’s money have to do with Cloud Communications?

It has EVERYTHING to do with Cloud Communications.  You see, Donald Trump is a very smart businessman.  He recognizes the value in using other people’s money because it mitigates risk.  The same benefit applies to Cloud Communications.  Suppose you wanted a new, state of the art, phone system for your business.  If you purchase it outright, you will take on risk.  First of all, you will impact your cash flow, as phone systems are not cheap, especially the good ones.  Next, you have to hire someone (or pay someone) to maintain it.  Then, as new technology becomes available, you have to either pay more money for the additional benefits and features, or risk falling behind your competitors who DO have the latest in technology.  Finally, what will happen to your business if your phone system fails or your place of business experiences a disaster?  That’s right, you have to pay for a business continuity solution.

With the SimiPlex Cloud Based Solution, those risks disappear.  Your provider (that’s us) performs all the necessary maintenance and support, all new features become available to you immediately, at no extra cost to you, and business continuity is included.  All of our cloud based solutions feature multiple data center redundancy across the United States, and some of them even include global redundancy!  With the SimiPlex mobility package, your business continues to function even if your entire office is incapacitated.  Calls will continue to ring into your business via your mobile phone.  You get all this for a low monthly cost that will leave your cash flow flowing freely.  With the SimiPlex Cloud Based Solution, you will save money, time, and mitigate risks, just like Donald Trump, by using OPM; Other People’s Money.

Trump Campaign Announces Trump Talk – 9/19/16

The Trump Campaign writes in an article posted on https://www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/trump-campaign-announces-trump-talk as follows:

“The Trump Campaign is excited to announce Trump Talk, an interactive phone banking system developed for supporters to spread Mr. Trump’s message to Make America Great Again.

Trump Talk allows users to remotely call Trump supporters from a computer or phone. The program engages users to level up through the number of calls made with the ability to win prizes for high-volume callers for when a certain number of calls is reached. Trump Talk is personalized to each individual’s lifestyle and availability by asking user’s daily goal every time they log on.”

Let’s discuss the technology Trump is using to accomplish his Trump Talk Let’s Make America Great Again initiative.

Mr. Trump is using a technology similar to the SimiPlex Cloud Omni Channel Contact Center.  He’s using a bank of phone lines to enable the masses to reach him.  He is using an IVR (Interactive Voice Response) solution to direct the call flow by asking a series of questions and recording the responses in a database.  He is using a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) solution to keep track of caller’s lifestyle and preferences, and call analytics to keep track of the frequency of each caller.

If Donald Trump were advising you about your business, he may suggest that you look into the SimiPlex Cloud Omni Channel Contact Center solution, so that you can offer seamless consistent results to your customers, every single time, no matter which agent handles the calls.  First of all, you get access to a bank of phone lines, in the cloud.  This means, you don’t have to pay the phone company to install the bank of lines at your office.  The line usage is included with our service.  This frees up your cash flow for more important things, such as growing your business.

Our built in IVR system will direct your call flow and free up your agents from mudane activities which can be automated.  Callers can perform automated tasks such as looking up account balances, placing orders, and opening service requests, all from a touch tone telephone.  Freeing up your agents will lower your operating costs and free up some more of your cash flow, by enabling you to maximize your agents for the customer interactions that require human interaction.

Our CRM integration will enable your agents to effectively capture important pieces of information , so that the next time this caller contacts your business, any agent answering the call can pick up where the last one left off.  With world class customer service like this, your business will crush the competition!

With built in call analytics, every piece of information is tracked.  Know who is calling, when he’s calling, how many times he called, and what his service experience was like.  You will know how well your agents are supporting your customers, and how well your business is running, overall.  Knowledge like this will empower you to make executive decisions such as, “Do I have enough call volume to hire additional staff?” as well as “What is my busy hour, and which parts of the day/week/month do we need additional help?”

With a solution like this, you can help Make America Great again by buidling a healthy business, dominating your industry, and crushing your competition – all by using OPM –  Don’t spend your own money, use Other People’s Money by going with The Cloud!

Sources: Donald Trump Listened In On Phone Lines At Mar-A-Lago – 6/30/16

North Korean media praises Trump – 6/1/16

In an article posted on BuzzFeedNews https://www.buzzfeed.com/aramroston/sources-donald-trump-listened-in-on-phone-lines-at-mar-a-lag?utm_term=.jud0EVygE#.vaQaMYjlM Aram Roston writes the following:

  • “Trump had a phone console near his bed that could connect to every phone in the estate.
  • Several workers said Trump used the equipment to secretly listen in on phone calls in the mid-2000s.
  • Two Trump supporters said the tycoon didn’t eavesdrop.

A second source said he had direct knowledge that Trump ‘could pick up the phone in the bedroom and listen to any conversation that was going on.’ This person said Trump used it “to eavesdrop.” This source said that some staff, who used a separate switchboard, knew when Trump was listening in on calls, because when he did, a light on that switchboard would come on.

A fourth source said that Mar-a-Lago had a common type of company phone network that had a ‘barge-in’ capability. ‘Barge-in’ allows certain users to tap into and discreetly monitor other calls in the network. This source said Trump did occasionally monitor phone calls of employees but declined to give details.”

MSNBC posted  http://www.msnbc.com/tamron-hall/watch/north-korean-media-praises-trump-696716355615

“Donald Trump received praise from the North Korean State Media, labeling Trump a ‘wise politician.’ The editorial urges America to vote for Trump over Hillary Clinton.”

Hmmm.  I wonder if these two headlines are connected?

While staying out of polititical gossip, if you have a contact center in your business, it’s important to keep in mind the following features that Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un know inherently:

  • Call Listen
  • Call Record
  • Barge-In

These features are part of the Quality Management features offered by the SimiPlex Cloud Omni Channel Contact Center.  With these features, your supervisors are able to monitor the quality of service your agents are delivering to your customers, and provide coaching, as necessary.  Barge-in enables a supervisor to barge into an ongoing call with a customer and provide assistance.  With the benefits delivered by Quality Management, your contact center will truly shine as the gold standard in customer service.  Your competition won’t stand a chance!  (Neither will Kim Jong-un’s!)

Clinton burying Trump: $42 million to $1.3 million – 6/21/16

In an article posted on CNN http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/20/politics/republicans-cash-crunch-donald-trump/ Theodore Schleifer writes:

“Donald Trump faces an extraordinary money deficit unheard of in modern presidential politics, entering the month with tens of millions of dollars less than Hillary Clinton.

Clinton’s campaign had $42 million in the bank as of May 31, according to its report filed with the Federal Election Commission Monday. Her super PAC Priorities USA has $52 million.

Trump’s campaign has $1.3 million.

The gulf emerges as Democrats lay out plans to spend that cash on an onslaught of television advertising that Trump has shown no urgency in matching. Clinton and her allied groups are planning to spend $117 million between Tuesday and Election Day on television — much of it anti-Trump television — while Trump and his groups have $700,000 in time awaiting him thus far.”

It’s clear to me why Trump raised less money.  It’s because he doesn’t have to spend as much as Clinton.  By utilizing the best The Cloud has to offer, Trump can save millions on his communications needs, and you can too.  Whether you’re growing a business or running for president, utilizing a cloud based solution will leave you with so much extra money, that your competition will be left wondering!

What We Know About Hillary Clinton’s Private Email Server – 9/2/16

In an article posted by the New York Times  http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/05/27/us/politics/what-we-know-about-hillary-clintons-private-email-server.html?_r=0 Alicia Parlapiano writes:

A federal judge on August 22 ordered the State Department to plan for the release of nearly 15,000 emails uncovered by the F.B.I. during its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified information on a private email domain as secretary of state. In July, The F.B.I. recommended no charges against Mrs. Clinton and said that there was no evidence that those emails were ‘intentionally deleted,’ but called her handling of her email at the State Department ‘extremely careless.’

This goes back to the old Cloud vs Premise debate.  Hillary Clinton utilized a premise based email server.  Somehow, through some ‘accident’, thousands of emails were mysteriously deleted.  Had she taken advantage of a cloud based email server, those emails would have been replicated on multiple servers across the globe, with no chance of them being ‘accidentally’ deleted.

The same benefit applies to your communications.  By leveraging a cloud based communications solution, should one data center experience a disaster, your communications will instantly become available on another data center at a different location.  Your services are replicated in real time to prevent a break in your business communications flow.  With The Cloud, your business is truly protected.

Donald Trump: I would force Mexico to build border wall – 6/28/15

Trump reveals how he would force Mexico to pay for border wall – 4/5/16

The Washington Post states the following:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-would-seek-to-block-money-transfers-to-force-mexico-to-fund-border-wall/2016/04/05/c0196314-fa7c-11e5-80e4-c381214de1a3_story.html

Donald Trump says he would force Mexico to pay for a border wall as president by threatening to cut off the flow of billions of dollars in payments that immigrants send home to the country, an idea that could decimate the Mexican economy and set up an unprecedented showdown between the United States and a key regional ally.

Another complication in Trump’s remittance proposal is that he also wants to deport all 11 million immigrants living illegally in the United States, many of whom come from Mexico.

Let’s think about what this means for businesses.  Any business employing Mexican workers would be faced with the dillema of having their workforce stranded on the other side of the wall.  How will this affect your business?  Will you have to higher new staff, at a higher rate of pay?

Fear no more!  With the SimiPlex Cloud Based Solution Mobility Package, before they’re deported, your workers can install a mobile app which enables them to make and receive business calls on their mobile phones via VoIP, all the way from Mexico!  Outgoing calls will show the company Caller ID, and any call can be transferred to other extensions throughout the company.

When Donald Trump finally does build the wall, your business will be able to function smoothly, thanks to The Cloud.
